48 Fathom Porter

A Carefully Crafted Dark Malt Showcase

We reached back to the Old World for the 48 Fathom, which is more like an English Porter than an American one. As such, it features more caramel and chocolate malt character; some coffee aroma is noticeable, but roastiness is restrained. Hop character is essentially absent. 48 Fathom gets its sweetness from a high mash temperature, which creates unfermented natural malt sugars in the finished beer. Like most of our beers, it is made entirely from water, malt, hops, and yeast, and nothing else. Despite a fairly low IBU count, careful selection of dark malts increases the perceived bitterness, so the malt sweetness dissipates in a nice, balanced finish. Porters make perfect pairings with nearly any dish that calls for a dry red wine, and are excellent additions to rich gravies and barbecue sauces.
